WASTE WATCHERS

The Waste Watchers Group was set up by George Andrews in 2009 and ably coordinated by him until late 2022 when 3 of us took over the joint running of the flourishing group. During his tenure over 4 tons of litter was collected. Thanks to George’s stirling work after 10 years he was awarded the Richmond Borough Environment Award for individuals, projects and groups specifically focussed on tackling environmental issues.

Waste Watchers is currently run by Chris Coates, Janet Croney and Julie Reeves.

A group of usually between 8-15 volunteers meets on the first Saturday of each month at 9.30 in Templeton Place to spend roughly an hour collecting varied types of litter and rubbish from the local streets and car parks. We then reconvene and weigh the collected rubbish, averaging 30-70kg, before moving and leaving it for the council to collect.

Pickers, hoops, bags and hi-vis jackets are provided for those who need them. The group is regularly joined by local councillors and occasionally our local MP and we have welcomed Duke of Edinburgh students for short periods.

Communication with volunteers is by email and new collectors are always welcome.

The United Nations has published 10 easy actions to help limit climate change

Everyone can help limit climate change. From the way we travel, to the electricity we use, the food we eat, and the things we buy, we can make a difference.

MUSIC GROUP

The Music Group has been in existence since 1974. We meet most months with members
taking turns to host an evening of music in their home for the rest of the group to enjoy. We stop
at half time for refreshments and it is a very convivial evening all round.

We're not experts just enthusiasts. That's not to say we don't have experts on areas such as
world music, folk and jazz, we do, but they wear their expertise very lightly. The qualification is
that you like music and that you are open to listen and occasionally share your likes.
Probably the balance of what we listen to does favour classical music but we include all genres.
We also listen to World music, folk, jazz, blues, songs from the shows, pop, Country,
progressive rock, calypso and reggae.

If you do decide you want to join an evening to see if the music group might be for you, then i can assure you of a very warm welcome.

Community Police Liaison

Carole Atkinson is our Police Liaison representative and regularly attends Police Liaison Group (PLG) meetings.

Police Liaison Group Meetings are held at The Greenwood Centre. If you are interested in joining the meetings you can either just turn up or contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team  (SNT) at FullwellandHamptonHill@met.police.uk . We are also encouraging residents to become members of their local Neighbourhood Watch or, if there is not a watch in their road, to set one up.  More information can be obtained from nhwatchrichmond@gmail.com.  Our SNT hold regular contact sessions in the community, and you may have seen them at one of the Costas in the High Street.  They are always looking for other suitable venues where they can interact with the community, so if you have any suggestions, please feed them back to the SNT.
